A REVİEW OF WALL-E
WALL-E is an acronym for Waste Allocation Load Lifter
Earth-class-scrounging around the rubble alone, compacting trash, and
collecting random objects that have some seemingly sentimental value to the
robot. It seems to be one of the best animated films of the decade because
it is so entertaining, sweet and beautiful movie. It does raise some important
points about the amount of time that we spend in front of our computer/screens
these days, the lack of time that we spend playing outdoors and interacting
with others face to face, the nature of the consumption that rule the retail
market, and obesity as a result of consumption frenzy. But personally the
most attracting themes in the film are criticism of the system and of
environmental pollution.
Firstly Wall-e seems to be a kind of criticism of the
system. It is shown that a company called Buy N Large takes control over the
whole people. So it can be concluded that it presents the capitalism in the
real world because the companies have greater economies than even the
countries. For example some chief executive officers (CEO) of great companies
have more luxurious life than some presidents of the states; they can direct
more crowded communities than the presidents. The difference lies in the
regimes. The countries are usually governed with democracy yet the companies
are directed with monarchy. Then how does it happen? The companies make people
addict to company’s brand name; they trigger brand awareness and loyalty. Here
Wall-e shows what if a company takes hold of the regime. The answer is
consumption frenzy. As a result, the world changes into rubbish dump.
In addition, it tells
the humans that are gradually becoming machines on the contrary to the machines
that are acting like humans. The humans
are limited to move and think due to their flying armchairs and the screen
staying in front of them. That’s why
they are governed easily. New and unnecessary things are being invented to
entertain people. For example; in the film everybody wears red clothes but
suddenly an advertisement that shows new trend in blue causes all of the humans
to wear blue clothes. Finally they can’t even think due to being a slave of
technology.
What’s more the film criticizes environmental pollution
harshly. At the very beginning of the film, the view is from space to the
world. There is awkwardness because the world is neither blue nor white. It is
yellow because of the trash which consumer society makes. After, trash covered
with a cloud of dust, wind turbines which don’t work and chimneys of nuclear
power plants are demonstrated. The whole world seems crushed under a load of
rubbish. In the world that cannot be cleaned, Wall-e tries to manage it. But
the real dimension of unnecessary consumption results appears in Axiom which is
a kind of space ship. People don’t seem to change their mind in order not to
produce rubbish because they continue their consumption frenzy even more than
in the world. Ultimately Axiom will be in the same situation as in the world.
After all, Wall-e’s adventure enlightens us to the criticism
of wasteful consumer living and reminds us human ideals based in love and
friendship. We recognize a future portrayal of our planet that has been
corrupted by consumer lifestyles and ideals of dispensability. We learn that
simple acts of generosity and kindness are more valuable than dispensable
living. Also it is clear that the world is becoming a wasteland; no humans will
desire to live here. Therefore, we, as teachers of future, need to focus exactly
on these social subjects. We have the power to shape our future because
children are our future. We can replace the valueless society of today with
love and appreciation in the future by making them realize this awkwardness and
making human-human interaction easier.
